As beautiful as a still life


Have you ever had one of those moments when everything around you seems to be happening in slow motion? I experienced that recently after returning from a long vacation.

Let me set the stage by pointing out that it was a multi-site vacation with too many miles to drive and too much of a hassle to fly. So we took to the rails through D.C., Chicago, Pittsburg and Philadelphia. No seat belts, no traffic jams, no “two hands on the wheel,” no pat-downs, no flight delays, and no “stay in your seat unless you are using the restroom” directive. There were just vista views at 85 miles an hour.

It was late afternoon when we got home and we ended the vacation by sitting on the back porch with a glass of wine. Out by the compost piles a turkey popped her head
