Castlereagh artists Julie Simmons lost in her landscapes

JULIE Simmons pursued her love of painting 10 years ago and says it’s now “consuming her life”.

After travelling to Bathurst for a week-long painting workshop, the Castlereagh resident decided to pursue it as a career.

“I’ve always had an interest in art. When I left school, I trained as a graphic artist and worked in an art studio in the city, then I went to an engineering firm,” she said.

Mrs Simmons has built a new studio at the side of her house where she paints and frames her creations.

She describes her paintings as traditional but said she was leaning towards the Impressionistic.

“I started off doing traditional landscape paintings but now I’m getting into a bit more funky urban stuff, streetscapes and industrial,” she said.

“It’s more about how you feel about a subject, not what it looks like.”

She uses predominantly watercolour but also paints in oils, pastels and acrylics.
