KALAMAZOO, MI — David Markin had a way of looking you in the eye and knowing what was going on.

“I’m sure he would have made a great spy; you couldn’t put anything past him,” said his son Christopher Markin with a chuckle.

He described his father as a smart and analytical man who “could see through the clouds and get to the heart of the matter.”

“If you were full of it, he would say, ‘Stop and get to the point,'” Christopher Markin said. “His ability to listen and form an educated opinion was like no one else. You just don’t meet people like that any more. He inspired you to be a better person.”

Markin, 82, died Thursday morning in Florida, suffering with complications from an illness that set in about five weeks earlier.
