Going dotty for Yayoi Kusama

Reaching an advanced age has found Kusama painting more prolifically than ever and for the last few years she’s also been working on a parallel series of more figurative paintings which she calls My Eternal Soul and which are on show at Miro’s Mayfair gallery. Painted flat on a tabletop, these vibrantly coloured canvases bubble with free association images – eyes, suns, profiles, organic and microscopic forms – and of course an abundance of dots and nets. “Everyone asks me where my inspiration comes from, but I just pick up the paintbrush and follow my hand and the work just flows from me,” she says. Kusama’s art may be part malady, part therapy but it also reverberates with a powerful and positive energy that can work its magic on all of us, as well as the artist herself.
