With his hyper-real paintings of freeways, blocks of flats and satellite dishes, Australian artist Jeffrey Smart showed us a new way to look at Australia’s cities.

Mr. Smart, who died at the age of 91 on Thursday evening, rose to prominence by painting stark urban vistas at a time when many of his peers were depicting idyllic rural landscapes or eschewing reality with abstraction.
