Australian landscape photographer Peter Lik is opening a shop on North Michigan Avenue, a Chicago street known more for retail flagships than art galleries.
LIK Fine Art has leased 3,052 square feet on the ground floor of an office building at 444 N. Michigan Ave., where the gallery is expected to open in May.
Galleries are relatively rare on the Mag Mile, where retailers typically must generate millions of dollars in annual sales to afford the highest retail rents in Chicago. But Lik, who in 2014 sold a single photograph for $6.5 million, is no starving artist.
Lik has sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of prints, bolstered by retail shops in tourist destinations including Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, New York’s SoHo neighborhood and Miami’s Lincoln Road.
