Marjan Mozetich for Canada Day listening

Well, as yet another Canada Day looms into sight you might be considering a more novel way of celebrating our beautiful country than buying a 24-pack of our favourite beverage and burning some locally-raised meat in the backyard.

For the serious musician there are serious Canadian musicians to celebrate, both performers and composers. I have to confess that I prefer to talk about the composers whose works may live on for many years to come, and whose music will flow through the hands and minds of so many fine performers over the years and over the world.

But Canada is a young country and many of its composers came of age in that time in the mid-20th century when composers seemed to be on a path to out-intellectualize each other. The music was cryptically short but the program notes were verbosely long, and the result was material not so much to be
