The echoes and abstraction of West Marin sculptor Boiger

Peter Boiger has been a sculptor for some 50 years, but the million or so people who travel each year from all over the world to see his most famous work probably have never heard of him.

Boiger doesn’t mind. The 72-year-old artist considers it a great honor and “the most fundamental challenge that anybody could have had in his lifetime” to have had a chance to participate in creating Valley of the Destroyed Communities, a Holocaust monument at Yad Vashem in Israel.

In 1979, Boiger moved with his new bride to her native Israel and taught sculpture at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. Although the marriage didn’t last, Boiger met Dan Zur, then Israel’s preeminent landscape
