The daughter of a Canadian wheat farmer, the American painter Agnes Martin started on her path to fame in the 1960s with her vast, austere, grid-based paintings. In the first major museum retrospective since the artist’s death in 2004 at age 92, museum-goers in Europe and the U.S. will have a chance to figure out where Ms. Martin belongs in the history of art.
