Art dealer Meredith Long surveys the landscapes

Houston art dealer Meredith Long, 85, has a special affection for landscape paintings, especially when they depict the country. He’s always been an avid outdoorsman.

This weekend, Long is at the ranch in Brookshire he’s owned for about 50 years – a place his kids learned to drive and hunt, a place he also raised German short-haired pointers for years. “That’s one of the most arcane things I ever tried to do. We’d drive back and forth from Brookshire to feed the dogs,” he quipped last week as we sat in the plush-cozy “studio” room of his 56-year-old gallery.

On Thursday, Meredith Long Company opens an important exhibit featuring about 20 paintings by the 20th-century icon Andrew Wyeth, who died in 2009.

Including watercolors and oils on canvas, the works span more than 40 years of production, beginning in the 1940s. They include a few paintings and nude studies from the infamous
