Art events include Highwaymen exhibit in Orlando

This is the week to enjoy a little art history, starting with an exhibition of historically and socially important paintings at the Orange County Regional History Center in downtown Orlando.

Fourteen paintings by the now-famous Florida Highwaymen revel in our state’s natural beauty and tell the inspiring story of 26 self-taught black artists who worked around segregation and the Jim Crow laws of the 1950s and 1960s to sell their paintings. Many traditional art venues would not exhibit works by black artists, so these painters put their work in their cars and traveled the state’s roads to sell their brightly colored landscapes to white businesses including banks, doctor offices and restaurants.
