Colorful shows brighten winter drabness

The Brush Art Gallery and Studios and the New England Quilt Museum banish winter drabness and bring color to Lowell in new exhibitions opening this week.

The Brush, at 256 Market St., features “Impressionism from the Cape School of Art,” on view Jan. 17-Feb. 28, with a reception Jan. 24, 2-4 p.m. (Snow date Jan. 25).

The exhibit showcases six artists — John Clayton, Louis Del Russo, Arthur Egell, Rob Longley, Dennis Lucas and Margaret McWethy — who carry on the traditions of Provincetown Impressionism.

The Cape School of Art primarily focuses on plein air painting, a method where students, painting on location outdoors, learn to see color in its purest forms and paint the illusion
