‘Flashback’ exhibit marks historic anniversaries for art insititutions

NEW HARMONY, Ind. – With the University of Southern Indiana celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art celebrating its 40th, some sort of retrospective seemed in order.

It has taken form in the gallery’s current exhibit — a “flashback” comprised of pieces created by six current and former USI art faculty members from the mid-1980s to the present. The idea began when gallery director Garry Holstein came across a 1986 photograph of the group — Michael Aakhus, Lenny Dowhie, William Leth, John McNaughton, Carolyn Roth and Kathryn Waters — from the first faculty exhibition during the fledging years of USI’s art program.

“We’re really excited about this exhibit because there is such a diversity of forms, ideas and subject matter,” Holstein said. “We’ve had a great response so far.”
