Every year Spirit of the Lakes holds an art contest to solicit artwork from students to be chosen for the festival. The winner will get to see their art featured on t-shirts, marketing materials, and social media promoting the event. This year’s winner was Mound Westonka High School senior, now graduate, Julia Elling. The selected piece features a black and white sailboat made with tiny triangles, incorporating physics into the artwork.
“My sailboat piece displays the message that art has no boundaries,” says Elling. “This piece is made of vectors and was completed in my STEAM Integrated Physics course. I hope that by looking at this piece, the community takes that all subjects and fields use art and have the ability to express meanings. My piece displays the love I have for the lakes and living in Minnesota, while highlighting the importance of art across the board.”
