With two cases involving gay marriage in front of the Supreme Court and polls indicating that a majority of Americans now support gay marriage, 2013 is undoubtedly a big year for gay Americans.
Of course, things weren’t always so rosy, as a PSA from 1938 demonstrates. Though the Hollywood Code banned any references to homosexuality in 1934, the makers of “Lesbian Menace” got around the censorship by marketing the following as a “public service” film discouraging lesbianism. In the film, Peggy attempts to seduce her innocent coworker Betty, caressing the other woman’s arms, taking her to a movie and inviting her over for a (gasp!) sleepover.
