SAN JOSE — When a fire collapsed the roof of Holy Cross Church late last year, all that was left of artist Anthony Quartuccio’s revered mural of Jesus’ resurrection was one of its eight panels, smoke-stained and barely recognizable.

—It just made you feel like you were with Jesus rising up, ” said longtime parishioner Ann Fitzgerald.

The fire erased the signature work of an unheralded, amateur artist who, under different circumstances, might have enjoyed the critical praise and commercial success that eluded him. The mural depicted the image of Jesus rising from the site of his crucifixion in Jerusalem and upward toward the waiting hand of God.

“It was an object of wonderful, mystical meditation,” said his son, Anthony Quartuccio
