★ Asia Society: ‘The Artful Recluse: Painting, Poetry, and Politics in 17th-Century China’ (through June 2) With the fall of the Ming dynasty in 1644, China’s intellectual elite, many of them artists who worked in the imperial government, were thrown into a tailspin. Confucian ethics demanded filial devotion to the old regime. But how were they to demonstrate it? One way was to remove themselves from active life and signal their resistance through art.
