New Canaan Library exhibit features expressionist landscapes

Connecticut painter Helen Cantrell’s tactile oil landscape paintings are on exhibit in Expressionist Landscapes, at New Canaan Library in the H. Pelham Curtis Gallery through Sunday, June 16.

Cantrell’s work “offers an abstract view of intriguing landscapes and seascapes, utilizing both actual maps and extreme close up photography as techniques for abstraction,” according to Susan LaPerla, interim director of the library.

Born and raised in Chicago, Ill., she moved to New York City as a young woman to pursue her art education and has lived along the Northeastern coast for past 40 years, currently in Old Lyme.

She has studied painting and printmaking at numerous educational institutions, among them Washington University School of
