OFC, Latino theater join forces for ‘In the Heights’

When Annette Ramos heard OFC Creations acquired production rights for the first community theater production of In the Heights in Rochester, she picked up the phone.

“I immediately called Eric (Vaughn Johnson) and his company and said, ‘In order to do an authentic Latino production you must have an authentic Latino perspective,’ ” says Annette Ramos, co-founder of the Rochester Latino Theater Company.

Johnson’s company, based at RAPA and known for its energetic young actors, ended up jointly producing with the Latino theater company the Tony Award-winning musical — which has been praised for raising above stereotypes in its portrayal of the heavily Dominican-American Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan.

“It has been a fantastic experience working together,” says Ramos, who co-founded RLTC in 2011 to raise awareness
