Oroville landscape artist paints local rural scenes – Enterprise

OROVILLE — Painter Jon Shult left the South Bay in 2001 to become a prospector in Oroville. He was not seeking gold but beauty, and has shared rather than hoarded his discoveries.

Shult who grew up in Orland, was already familiar with the area. After high school, he moved to the Bay Area where he earned his bachelor’s in art at U.C. Santa Cruz and his master’s at San Jose State before settling in Oroville.

In urban cultural centers most artists must struggle to establish careers. That is even harder in rural California, although studio and living spaces are less expensive.

Shult was able to buy a Victorian Revival house in Oroville that provides him with living, teaching, painting and exhibition spaces.
