Swing Gay, 1976, Jack Hamilton Bush.

As part of its “First Open/NYC” sale on March 6, Christie’s New York will auction Jack Bush’s Swing Gay. The Canadian artist studied at the Art Association of Montreal and the Ontario College of Art in the 1920s and ’30s and worked as a commercial artist and illustrator for many years. In 1953 Bush joined the Painters Eleven—an Abstract Expressionist group inspired by the gestural paintings of the New York School. At the suggestion of art critic Clement Greenberg, Bush dropped Abstract Expressionism in the ’60s and developed his “breakthrough” technique, seen here.
