Walls filled with local art as gallery grows

IT has been just over six months since Marion Hughes opened Gladstone’s only commercial art gallery.

At first the walls of the gallery were hung with her own watercolour paintings, but interest has grown rapidly and now there is work from 29 artists from Gladstone and as far west as Biloela.

Despite her gallery’s growth, Ms Hughes said Gladstone was a city lacking in art appreciation, with no events specifically devoted to celebrating or promoting painters.

“When I first started here it was the Marion Hughes show,” she said.
